Clement Lefebvre, the leader of Linux Mint, has revealed the code name of the next major release of the popular Ubuntu-based Linux Mint distribution. Linux Mint 22, called “Wilma”, is expected to be released in the summer of 2024, probably in June or July.
This distribution will be based on Canonical’s upcoming Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) operating system, expected in April 2024. Linux Mint 22 will use the Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Linux 6.8 kernel and feature a new major version of the Cinnamon desktop environment.
A significant new feature will be the introduction of the Nemo Actions Organizer, which will allow users to organize Nemo actions in menus and submenus.
As stated by Lefebvre in the January 2024 newsletter, this tool will support nested submenus, menu icons, separators, and drag and drop. Users will also have the ability to rename actions and override their icons.
Linux Mint 22: More stable Wayland session, but not default
The current release, Linux Mint 21.3 “Virginia”, based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish), introduced an experimental Wayland session. However, it doesn’t look like Linux Mint 22 will replace the default Xorg session with Wayland.
In October 2023, Clement Lefebvre stated that the Wayland session in Linux Mint should be fully ready in 2026 as part of the Linux Mint 23 series. Most likely, this distribution will offer a more stable Wayland session, but, as confirmed, it will not be activated for default setting.
